Focus and Scope

HIKAMI: Jurnal Ilmu Al-Qur’an dan Tafsir is a peer-reviewed journal dedicated to the critical and interdisciplinary study of the Qur’an, its interpretation, and its place in Muslim intellectual and social life. The journal examines the Qur’an as a text, an object of interpretation, and a living religious tradition, exploring how its meanings are articulated, transmitted, debated, and embodied across historical periods, geographical regions, and intellectual traditions. It welcomes research on diverse exegetical traditions, from classical to contemporary contexts, including the tur?th of the Nusantara region, and seeks to foster dialogue between established Islamic scholarship and emerging approaches to Qur’anic and tafsir studies.

The journal welcomes contributions from Qur’anic Studies, tafsir studies, Islamic intellectual history, Arabic linguistics and literary studies, and related fields in the humanities and social sciences. It particularly encourages research that combines close textual analysis, methodological reflection, historical inquiry, and empirical investigation. HIKAMI aims to advance rigorous scholarship on the Qur’an, encompassing the linguistic and scholarly disciplines that inform its interpretation, the development and circulation of exegetical traditions, contemporary theoretical and methodological debates, and the diverse ways in which the Qur’an is received and lived in Muslim societies.

Topics

The journal invites submissions that address topics including, but not limited to:

1. Classical and Contemporary Tafsir: Interpretive methods, exegetical traditions, intellectual genealogies, and the development of Qur’anic interpretation across historical periods and geographical regions, including the turath of the Nusantara region.

2. Qur’anic Sciences and Interpretive Disciplines: Ul?m al-Qur'an and the scholarly disciplines that inform Qur’anic interpretation, including, but not limited to, qawaid, tartib, rasm al-mushaf, qira'at, and waqf wa al-ibtida.

3. Qur’anic Linguistics and Literary Studies: The Arabic language of the Qur’an, semantics, rhetoric, literary structures, stylistics, and other linguistic and literary approaches to Qur’anic meaning.

4. Methodology, Hermeneutics, and Contemporary Qur’anic Studies: Theoretical and methodological approaches to the Qur’an and tafsir, including historical, comparative, critical, and interdisciplinary engagements with classical and contemporary scholarship.

5. Qur’anic Reception and Lived Practices: The interpretation, appropriation, and enactment of the Qur’an in religious, educational, cultural, and social contexts, including its reception and lived practices in Indonesia and the wider Nusantara region.

6. Transregional Qur’anic and Islamic Intellectual Traditions: The circulation, encounter, and transformation of Qur’anic interpretations and Islamic intellectual traditions across Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and other geographical contexts.
